Sweet Sixteen

Well, it happened! Our "little girl" turned sixteen! We didn't get to have the celebration we had hoped for, but Alayna was surprised with a drive-by from friends, who couldn't resist getting out of their cars to say hello. They all wore masks and kept their distances, but I know it meant so much to Alayna to see them, a few of whom she hadn't seen since March. We had cupcakes ready for them and their parents (who stayed in their cars). I am so glad we were able to pull off the surprise!

Later that night, at 8:29pm, the time of her birth, we zoom called with both sets of grandparents and aunts, uncles and cousins to sing "Happy Birthday". It was crazy and chaotic and fun.

Alayna isn't your typical 16-year-old young woman. She's not in a hurry to get her license, she's not into clothes or make up and she's not in a race for popularity. She hasn't once complained about having to spend the 10th grade at home or all the stuff she's "missing" out on. I am so proud of how she's handled this pandemic (honestly, much better than many adults I know). I love that she has strong opinions and isn't afraid to state them. I'm so proud that she understands media biases and has the skills to think critically and make decisions. She is definitely beyond her years. She's quiet, kind, pensive, creative, talented, compassionate, caring and smart as a whip. It's been an absolute privilege to parent her this far and know she's setting herself up for big things.

Happy 16th Birthday, Alayna Evelyn! We love you so!
