The Tale of a Femur

No, that's not a knee.

That's Jeremiah's right femur. Broken. On the growth plate just below the trochanter. What was he doing, you might ask? Climbing a tree? Mountain biking or hiking and fell from a high place? Nope. He was simply getting from point A to point B on his skateboard. And he fell. Hard. On just the wrong spot. The break was so bad, none of the local orthopedic surgeons wanted to touch it. So, he had to travel by ambulance to Valley Children's Hospital in Madera (three hours away) and get surgery done my a pediatric orthopedic specialist. Eeesh. Did I mention this happened the week I had my NCLEX review? And right at the beginning of Peter's work week? And a mere 19 days before the end of his 8th grade school year? Oh, and 3 days before we were moving into a new rental--a TWO-STORY rental? Timing is everything.

The surgery went off without a hitch. Jeremiah has been recovering well. He had his two week post-op check up today and was told "everything looks good".  He will continue to be "toe-touch" but non-weight bearing for 4-6 weeks. He's getting along fine with the crutches and his pain is minimal. He had to cut his school year short, and his official last day was 3 weeks ago. Now, he will spend the summer healing and, hopefully, will be ready to walk into his first day of high school in August.

Here are some photos from his trip to the hospital.

(Yay for awesome nurses!)
